Arsenal get major transfer boost for Granit Xhaka’s £19m teammate

One of Switzerland’s top stars, Ricardo Rodriguez could easily push Nacho Monreal for the starting left back job.

Arsenal appear to leaving no stone unturned this summer as they try to build a title favorite for next season. Though Jamie Vardy is keeping the Gunners hanging, the club may have found a player who better fits their plans in VfL Wolfsburg left back Ricardo Rodriguez.

In an interview with Blick [per the Metro], Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs admitted that Rodriguez was seeking to leave the German giants and that keeping the 23-year-old defender might prove ‘unrealistic’.

‘As we have recently gathered, it was clear. His idea is to leave us,’ Allofs said.

Arsenal were recently linked with a move for Rodriguez, who has a £19 million release clause.

Rodriguez has been a star for Wolfsburg over the past five years, making 125 appearances since making the switch from FC Zurich and scoring a career-high 10 goals in all competition during Wolfsburg’s 2014-15 campaign.

He has also been heavily capped for Switzerland and will represent the country alongside newly-signed Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka in Euro 2016.

The Swiss left back would conceivably be brought in to push star defender Nacho Monreal, who despite his solid play last season is still on the wrong side of 30.
