How Newcastle United can secure Champions League spot early despite Liverpool win

Newcastle United are still not quite there in terms of booking their place in next season’s Champions League, but it could be done by this weekend if things go their way.

The Magpies are currently third on 66 points, level with Manchester United, and just one point ahead of Liverpool, who beat Leicester City last night to keep Eddie Howe’s side waiting a bit longer to confirm a top four finish.

It could be, though, that Newcastle will be celebrating Champions League football by the end of the week if they can beat Brighton in their next game, and Aston Villa then get an unlikely win over Liverpool on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have won seven Premier League games in a row, so it’s not going to be easy for Villa to pick up three points at Anfield.

Newcastle fans may just have to be patient, with Brighton also not looking like an easy game at all right now after their strong form this season, particularly with that 3-0 win away to Arsenal on Sunday.
