Recent Manchester United signing didn’t join for football reasons, claims dressing room source

Manchester United fans will have been excited by the big-name signing of Mason Mount from Chelsea last summer, but it’s fair to say the deal has been majorly disappointing so far.

The England international has had a fine career overall, but it’s fair to say he was underwhelming in his final season at Stamford Bridge, and he’s also struggled to make any kind of an impact at Old Trafford so far.

Part of that has been the amount of time he’s been out injured, but even before his lengthy spell on the sidelines Mount had struggled to show his best form for Erik ten Hag’s side.

According to the Manchester Evening News, sources close to another Man Utd player state that the 25-year-old did not primarily join the Red Devils for football reasons.

Mason Mount transfer may not have been for football reasons

It remains to be seen if we’ll ever find out more about what this means, but it seems a bit worrying from a United point of view as it might explain why the player has looked so out of sorts in recent times.

Mount transfer: Is the Manchester United midfielder one of the flops of the season?

Mount clearly has the potential to be a top player, as he’s shown throughout his career, but at the moment his signing looks like a big mistake for United.

Chelsea will surely be the happiest ones in this deal as they sold Mount for a big fee, representing pure profit on a player who came up through their academy.

For MUFC, it remains to be seen if Mount can bounce back from this, and the details in the Manchester Evening News certainly don’t paint a particularly happy picture for the player.

Interestingly, the report also added that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta seemed convinced he was close to signing him at one point.
