Newcastle United confirm 24-year-old set for surgery; will miss up to nine months

Newcastle United centre-back Sven Botman could be out for the remainder of the calendar year.

Since joining the Magpies from Lille just over 18 months ago, Botman, 24, has been a St. James’ Park revelation.

Quickly becoming a fan-favourite, the industrious and hard-working 24-year-old has become best known for his tenacious style of defending while forming a solid partnership with veteran Fabian Schar.

However, making his 22nd appearance of the season during last weekend’s FA Cup quarter-final defeat against Manchester City, Newcastle’s number four injured his knee and is now set for a prolonged period on the sidelines.

Confirming fans’ worst fears, Newcastle United, via their official X account, have announced the centre-back will be undergoing surgery on his ACL next week and will be out for approximately six to nine months.

“Sven Botman will undergo surgery next week after suffering a knee injury against Manchester City,” the club said.

“A scan has confirmed that he sustained an injury to his ACL and he is expected to return within 6-9 months.”

Magpies’ bad luck continues

Eddie Howe’s brutal luck with injuries continues with Botman the latest first-team star to be laid up on the treatment table.

The Magpies have endured a torrid campaign after failing to replicate their success from last season. However, much of the club’s poor performances have come down to injuries, fitness issues and player ineligibility.

Although the majority of Howe’s first team have suffered some sort of injury this season, some of the team’s longest absentees have included goalkeeper Nick Pope (shoulder), Joelinton (thigh) and Sandro Tonali (suspension).

Botman now joins that list with the former Lille defender not expected until at least the end of the year.
