Manchester City have made a bid for Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa as rivals Manchester United also eye up a potential move for the player.

Sources close to the situation have informed CaughtOffside that there looks to be a fierce battle to sign Costa this summer, with his release clause set at €75m, but with Porto willing to consider offers closer to a figure of around €60m.

Man City have so far offered €40m for Costa, which won’t be enough, but CaughtOffside understands that City are expected to increase their offer.

Man Utd could also get involved, however, as Ruben Amorim is eager to sign an upgrade on Andre Onana in goal, with Costa a player who is well appreciated at Old Trafford.

They are behind City in the race for the Portugal international’s signature at the moment, though, so will need to move fast in order to stand a realistic chance of getting this deal done.

Diogo Costa to Manchester United or Manchester City this summer?

Costa has shone for Porto and in a way it’s surprising he hasn’t earned himself a big move already, though it’s understood that he’s had some reservations about relocating his family to England.

The 25-year-old is clearly good enough to play at the very highest level, though, so the Manchester clubs will surely do everything they can to convince him.

If it comes down to choosing between City and United right now, it would surely be a no-brainer if Costa wants to play for a successful side that can win major trophies.

United are a mess at the moment, with Ruben Amorim’s side slumped all the way down in 15th place in the Premier League table.

City haven’t had a great season by their high standards, but are surely more likely to be challenging for the title again before too long, whereas United look like they face a lengthy job of rebuilding before they can even think about competing for the top four.

Costa could help MUFC a lot by giving them a much-needed replacement for Onana, but he’d surely rather not risk it and go to the Etihad Stadium instead.

  1. Do you always have print united before city? Why. It’s not alphabetical. And United have been crap for 12 years. They are worse now than ever before. So it’s not out of standing. United fan I presume. This goalkeeper is a done deal to City anyway. Catch up.
