Former Liverpool player claims he couldn’t have played for another English club after his career at Anfield
by offsidetrap on August 20th, 2008Mr. Header himself, John Arne Riise, is well on his way to playing his first season in Seria A with famed outfit, Roma. While he’s more than happy to be getting a second chance from a club that obviously doesn’t know his shortcomings, he does want Liverpool supporters to know that he will always remain true to Liverpool — even though he had numerous offers from other English clubs.
Riise said: ‘Clubs like Liverpool are always looking round the world for players, and there is always going to be someone new challenging you.
‘It was sudden. One day I was a Liverpool player, the next I was going to leave.
‘I just wanted to make sure I got the best possible club. There was no way I was going to be comfortable playing for another English club, and I had plenty of offers from other clubs in the Premier League.
‘I didn’t have to leave because I had another year left, but I did want to be playing regularly and I didn’t feel that would happen this season if I stayed.
‘I spent seven years at Liverpool and played more than 250 games. The challenge in Italy was the right one for my career and the time was right to change to another country.’ (Metro UK)
I’m not sure whether Liverpool supporters were happy to see him go, or if they would have rather seen him heading the ball into the opposing teams net at someone else’s expense. Regardless, it appears Riise’s comments are genuine. No matter how you look at the situation, he’s going to be a Red for life.
What do Liverpool supporters think of JAR’s recent comments?

Everbody blames JAR for the own goal against Chelsea that helped knocked us out of the Champions league. Ok it was a trebble error on his part. But the two denfenders around the ball should never have allowed the cross in the dying seconds of the game anyway and should have really taken the bulk of the blame….. And for all of you who are still saying Riise this and Riise that I have a Question for you……Who was it that score a own goal from the edge of his own box to bring Chelsea back into League cup finale we had under control and we ended up losing 3-2 after extra time?……….Steven Gerrard that who……so leave JAR be,

The own goal was definitely a defining moment in our season, but lets not forget all the great things he has done with liverpool, especially he’s penchant for the spectacular strike on goal. Lets also not forget that it was his cross which led to gerrard’s header in the champions league final, after he had shrugged of gattuso. It was also his his cross which led to the clearance for gerrard to strike in that last gasp equaliser in the FA cup final. All in all, it can be said without a shadow of a doubt that he had a successful 7 year spell in liverpool.
I i think i speak for liverpools fans everywhere when i say that the own goal was just a mistake, although a costly one, but we’ve moved on, we’ll always remember him and we wish Riise all the best in roma.

fantastic servant for the club. the one problem was the lack of pace, for me. The memories will remain of the stunning goals and breaking alan smith’s ankle with a ball.

JOHN ARNE RIISE, was superb at left bk or left midfield. big strong lad with a rocket of a left foot…… unfortunate last season wiv the own goal, BUT LESS WE FORGET WHAT YOU BROUGHT TO THE CLUB, in your 7yr stay. The full length runs up the pitch n scorin(against arsenal & chelsea). the numerous rockets of goals, the best against the red scum. the ball to stevie g in the famous come bk in the champions league final.etc etc etc….. BEST OF LUCK TO HIM AT ROMA. the KOP will no doubt give u a resoundin rececption if u return to ANFIELD.
