Chelsea face competition from Barcelona in race to sign John Stones

Spanish giants Barcelona have become the latest club to show an interest in Everton defender John Stones and could go up against Chelsea and Manchester United for his signature, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The report states that Barcelona sent a team of scouts to Alicante last week to watch England take on Spain, and their initial brief was to keep an eye on Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy, who ended up not taking part in the game.

Stones didn’t play against Spain either, but his performance against France on Tuesday will ensure that the La Liga giants have paid attention.

Just days before Barcelona defender Gerard Pique named Stones as the only Englishman in his World XI, praising him by labelling him as “one of a new generation who understand football not just as a defender”.

However, manager Roberto Martinez has set the price of the 21-year-old to above £30m, meaning Barca would have to dig deep to prize him away from Goodison Park.
