“We have more options” – Chelsea star’s father drops hint over summer transfer plans

The father of Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen has dropped a hint over the Dutch defender’s future this summer, suggesting a permanent move to loan club Borussia Dortmund is not the only option for him.

However, Maatsen has done well on loan at Dortmund so far and it seems they’d be happy to extend his stay with the Bundesliga giants if possible, even if there could be alternatives being kept in mind as well.

“We have more options besides Chelsea and Dortmund, but Dortmund has proven to be a good restart,” Maatsen’s father said to Voetbal International.

Maatsen struggled for playing time while he was at Stamford Bridge, so it’s surely not too surprising to see the player’s father publicly talking up a potential move away this summer, with Fabrizio Romano also informing CaughtOffside earlier today that the youngster is highly unlikely to remain with the west Londoners.

Chelsea fans will hope they can get a good fee from selling Maatsen, which could be important for Financial Fair Play reasons, though it remains to be seen if this might end up being a sale that the Blues live to regret.

Maatsen transfer: Could this be another Salah or De Bruyne?

Chelsea aren’t exactly blessed with the best options at left-back right now as Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella have both been pretty inconsistent, while the club have also lived to regret selling some top young players in the past.

Ian Maatsen is surely leaving Chelsea

CFC notably had Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne on their books at one point, but let both players go without giving them much of a chance, before they later ended up being star players at two of their main rivals.

Maatsen might not end up being quite in that league, but he’s been very impressive at Dortmund and there’s surely an argument for him being made first choice while the likes of Chilwell and Cucurella are moved on instead.
