Is there any reason Heskey would find first team football at Anfield, if he can’t get it at Villa Park? The answer, in case you were wondering, is no!

Aston Villa manager ‘perturbed, surprised and disappointed’ by striker injury

by stresster on February 13th, 2009 2 comments

It’s nothing new to see a club manager criticising the timing of friendly internationals, or even question why they take place at all. Martin O’Neill is clearly seething after bidding his players farewell earlier in the week, only to find one return with a recurrence of an Achilles injury that could threaten Aston Villa’s chances of Champions League football next term. Chelsea manager in a big Egyptian river – Manchester United are home and hosed

Avram Grant is in denial (Da Nile) if he thinks Chelsea can still win the Premier League after their inability to beat Wigan on Monday. The Latics have taken points off the Blues, Arsenal and Liverpool in 2008 at crucial moments and Steve Bruce’s men have essentially meant that a silver platter should now be presented to Manchester United containing the league title.

The Guardian reports that the Blues boss refuses to concede defeat in public, but secretly he must be doing a pretty good impression of Dastardly and Mutley when they mess up in Wacky Races. They had a chance to push the Red Devils very close this term but their inability to beat teams like Wigan, Everton, Aston Villa and Blackburn at home have cost them dear.

“We need to win the games against Everton and Manchester United,” admitted Grant. “If not, it will be more difficult. We are still in it and we will keep on fighting but we need one more bad result off Manchester United.

“The result did not help us but I thought the second half was one of our best performances from the footballing point of view. Every three or four minutes we created chances but their goalkeeper gave an excellent performance. This is football though; when you don’t score the other team does.”

Realistically, they should have been out of sight before Heskey struck late to land his team their best point of the season to date. Grant will be criticised for starting with Malouda, a relative flop since joining last summer, especially at the expense of the tricky Joe Cole. It’s Champions League or bust for Chelsea now, will it be third time lucky against Liverpool?

Heskey looking to bounce back from injury woes

by sub on February 26th, 2008 1 comment
  • Digg

For most of this season, Wigan Athletic striker Emile Heskey has been terrorised by a host of injuries and as he rightly admits, it’s been a season to forget for the 30-year old giant England international striker.

Yet the small matter of Premiership survival lingers on for Wigan and now that he is back from his injury misery, Heskey is eager to shove his injury demons to the past. The former Liverpool striker says that he wants to play a key role in the remaining 11 games in the Premiership season to help the Lactics avoid relegation from the Premiership.

He says:

Even at this stage of the season, I feel I haven’t really played.

It started off so well, but then I got the setback of breaking my foot and I’ve never really come back properly. I’d play a couple of games and then something else would happen.

It’s been a season to forget so far, but I’m not writing it off because we still have a lot of important games to come.

This is the first season I have had serious injury problems. It has seemed to be one after another which has been frustrating.

Getting out on the pitch is my aim. When you’re watching the lads from the stand you want to be out there with them.

I definitely think I can play a big part in the last 11 games, hopefully get some goals and provide others for the lads.

Wigan certainly do need a giant, tall and decent-in-the-air striker like Heskey who has loads of experience in the Premiership. But can Wigan stave off the drop even with Heskey in their first team? At the moment, it doesn’t appear too likely.

Shock horror! Wigan striker out of England squad

by stresster on February 3rd, 2008 3 comments
  • Digg

It had an air of the inevitable about it. No sooner had Wigan striker Emile Heskey put a string of appearances together for his team, thus earning an England call-up as a result, injury strikes once again. The Daily Telegraph report that the former Liverpool and Birmingham player will not be adding to his 45 caps on Wednesday, leaving Fabio Capello short of striking options once again.

Bruce confirmed: “Emile has got a nerve problem and it’s a continuation of a big fella being out for two or three months. He’s had little strains and he’s not right. He’ll be pulling out.”

Many England fans won’t regard it as a huge loss, considering Heskey has scored just one goal all season. However, it appears that while Capello has a stockpile of defenders and midfielders from which to select, his attacking options are limited to Wayne Rooney, Peter Crouch and Gabriel Agbonlahor for the match against Switzerland.
