While most people with half a brain think that Frank Lampard was a tad unfortunate to receive his marching orders at Anfield on Sunday, this opinion isn’t shared by this Liverpool defender. Using his powers of objectivity, he reckons that the challenge could have done some serious damage to team-mate Xabi Alonso and, on that basis, he deserved to be sitting alone in the away team’s bath. Are the Reds about to leave themselves short in the striker department? Although Fernando Torres hit a brace against Chelsea, the Spaniard has been injured for enough of the season not to take him for granted between now and the end of the campaign. Nevertheless, it appears as though Liverpool are prepared to cut their losses for a player who cost upwards of £20 million in the summer. [Read the rest of this entry »]

It’s an tough old job being a Premier League football manager. Lose a few matches and there are rumours about your future at the club, while it’s a big old problem trying to keep everyone in the squad happy, especially those who aren’t getting much in the way of first-team action. Most Anfield regulars will have been pleased to see Arsenal beat Manchester United on Saturday. Whilst the Gunners are one of the best teams in the division, the Red Devils will surely pose a more serious threat to Liverpool’s title chances this season, and the result at the Emirates means that the Merseyside club are now eight points clear of the champions. Last season, many people accused Rafael Benitez of rotating his team too much, especially in the early part of the season. Indeed, the Spaniard has changed tack this term, picking a settled XI for most matches, although there appears to be one position still very much up for grabs. [Read the rest of this entry »]

The Reds suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season last weekend, when they threw away a goal lead to lose 2-1 at White Hart Lane. Rafael Benitez was far from happy that his team didn’t kill Spurs off by getting that all-important second goal, and it’s clear that they have been missing a certain hotshot in the last few weeks. The Reds are practically through to the Champions League knockout stages after a 1-1 draw with Atletico, although it appears they had to rely on a piece of gamesmanship to land a precious point on Tuesday night. The visitors looked to be on their way to a historic victory at Anfield, before a collision on the edge of the penalty area led to the referee blowing his whistle. [Read the rest of this entry »]

Have the Reds proved that they can manage without their star striker? The answer would have been ‘yes’ before Saturday evening’s match at White Hart Lane, although they had only squeaked past Portsmouth and Wigan at home without the Spaniard that makes things happen every time he sets foot on the pitch. Sometimes a footballer returns to his former club and gets a rapturous round of applause, take Peter Crouch at Anfield on Wednesday night. The supporters can be understanding if the player has wanted to leave due to a lack of first-team football, especially if he gave his all for the team when he was there. However, it remains to be seen whether Tottenham’s fans will be putting their hands together when their ex-striker takes to the field on Saturday evening. [Read the rest of this entry »]

Winning the title isn’t just about winning at Stamford Bridge, as Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard have been reiterating since Liverpool won 1-0 on Sunday. Indeed, you only get as many points for ending the Blues’ 86-match unbeaten run as you do for beating Stoke at home, which incidentally was something that the Reds failed to do earlier in the season. Rafael Benitez is all-too aware of the threat posed by Portsmouth on Wednesday night, especially the capabilities of one striker… [Read the rest of this entry »]

We’ve had several false dawns before, as far as Liverpool and a Premier League title challenge are concerned. Indeed, the Reds haven’t really got anywhere near winning the league under Rafael Benitez and, with less than a quarter of the season gone, the bookmakers still have them as third-favourites to land the spoils. However, could this campaign see them finally realise their potential? [Read the rest of this entry »]

The Blues are unbeaten at Stamford Bridge in 84 games, and it’s looking as though number 85 is just around the corner. In order to stand a chance of beating Chelsea, surely you need a match winner or two in the team, something that Liverpool are struggling with ahead of Sunday’s match. [Read the rest of this entry »]

Late comebacks to beat Wigan and Middlesbrough at home are one thing, victories at Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford are another. Liverpool face an extremely stiff of their credentials in West London on Sunday, especially as Chelsea have scored nine goals without reply in their last three league matches. Can the Reds get something from the match and keep their unbeaten run going? [Read the rest of this entry »]

The Reds have only failed to win two matches in the Premier League so far this season, both of which finished goalless (against Stoke and Aston Villa). In four of their other games, their opponents have taken the lead before Liverpool have fought back to land the three points, something which demonstrates character but is also a worrying sign that this team might fall short as far as a title bid is concerned. Rafael Benitez may have spent over £20 million on Robbie Keane and have arguably the best striker in the world on the books at Anfield, although that hasn’t stopped him from throwing his hat into the ring as far as this forward is concerned. But can they compete with the financial might of Manchester City, despite having a much better team at the moment? [Read the rest of this entry »]

The Latics were 2-1 up in the 75th minute at Anfield on Saturday, when Antonio Valencia unwisely decided to lunge at Xabi Alonso and earn a second yellow card for his troubles. As we all know, Liverpool went on to win the match 3-2, and while Rafael Benitez denied that the dismissal changed the match, his opposite number was fuming by the final whistle! It’s easy to forget that Mark Hughes was previously manager of Wales. Especially when you hear the Manchester City manager banging on about how something should be done to stop players going off to play for their country and coming back with an injury which will see them out of action for the best part of the season. Pesky international breaks. Premier League managers send off their players with a hug, kiss and a reminder not to go breaking any legs or pulling a hamstring. And what happens? They return with a slight limp or with a pair of designer crutches and are potentially ruled out for the next fortnight. [Read the rest of this entry »]

In the past twelve months, there has been plenty of speculation linking Rafael Benitez with the Anfield exit door. However, this has been mainly due to his spiky relationship with Messrs Gillett and Hicks, rather than the Spaniard actually wanting to leave Anfield or being unhappy in his long-standing role as Liverpool manager. Now it appears as though he’s being sough-after from abroad. [Read the rest of this entry »]
