Eddie Howe wowed by midfielder’s positioning against Arsenal

Newcastle United beat Arsenal two-nil during Monday night’s important Premier League clash at St James’ Park.

The Magpies were rampant from the very first whistle to the last. The side from the North East was first to every ball, won every challenge and passed the Gunners off the pitch.

An own goal from Ben White and then a late strike from midfielder Bruno Guimaraes sealed the result with Mikel Arteta’s Gunners left to lick their wounds as the race for the top four now swings in favour of Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur.

Following what was an absolutely brilliant performance from every single Newcastle United player, manager Eddie Howe continues to vindicate the board’s decision to appoint him as Steve Bruce’s successor.

Howe owes a lot of success to January signing Guimaraes though. The Brazilian midfielder has been a revelation for the Toon.

Bruno Guimaraes celebrates scoring his team’s second goal against Arsenal.

Despite transforming his side’s defensive midfield, the South American is not without goals of his own.

Having now scored five goals in his first 16 appearances for the club, the 24-year-old is certainly one of his side’s most impactful players and Howe clearly recognises that.

Speaking to the club’s official website after Monday’s game against Arsenal, Howe admitted that even he was surprised to see the midfielder so close to the Gunners’ goal during the build-up to his side’s second.

“I thought he was excellent today. Defensively very good,” Howe said.

“On the ball he’s a brilliant technician and I thought he played some creative passes from deep. He pops up with another goal.

“I don’t even know what he was doing up there! He was playing in a slightly deeper role than he has been.”
