James Ward-Prowse would be an excellent fit for Newcastle United.

That is the view of transfer journalist Dean Jones, who believes a move to St James’ Park this summer for the Southampton midfielder would be an excellent piece of business for the Magpies.

Following the Saints’ confirmed relegation to the Championship last weekend, the south coast team are now expected to lose several key players, and with Ward-Prowse an established England international, it is widely expected that he’ll be the first name out the St Mary’s exit.

And already heavily linked with a move to Newcastle United as the Geordies look to add quality-in-depth to their relatively thin squad ahead of next season, which looks set to include Champions League football, Ward-Prowse is a name Howe could pursue.

“I think Ward-Prowse would actually fit well at Newcastle,” Jones told GiveMeSport.

“In terms of character and also as a footballer. I think it’s quite refreshing that Longstaff is missed this much to be honest.”
