Gareth Southgate has a warning for Manchester United star Marcus Rashford

Gareth Southgate, the England boss, has told Marcus Rashford to behave himself in the lead-up to Euro 2024.

Erik ten Hag penalised the 26-year-old Manchester United star £650,000, or two weeks’ wages, for skipping training following his bender in Belfast last month.

Rashford has been one of the main players in the England setup under Southgate, who has used the United star frequently.

The England manager made it quite evident that he will be closely monitoring each and every one of his players over the coming months.

Southgate said: ‘We’re five weeks away from picking a squad. So much happens to players over the period between November and March that we’re always sitting and observing everything on and off the pitch.

‘In a few weeks’ time we’ll have decisions to make on the whole squad and there’s going to be a lot of attention on that because it’s the final squad before the Euros.’

Rashford’s two consecutive nights spent out partying in Northern Ireland have not yet been discussed by Southgate with him.

The Three Lions boss said: ‘I haven’t spoken to many of our players at all since December. I’ve let them get on with their club football.

‘Generally they are back from their clubs and it’s not for me to interfere.’

Rashford’s off the pitch behaviour has been criticised by the club and the fans. Even though the United attacker came back and scored straight away in his first match against Wolves, people around the club have demanded professional behaviour from him moving forward.

The England international was also on the wrong end of disciplinary issues last year when he went to a party after United’s 3-1 loss against Manchester City.

With Rashford losing his form this season after scoring 30 goals last season, he needs to be at his best if United are to achieve something this season. Their only realistic chance of winning a trophy is the FA Cup.
