Xabi Alonso’s priority revealed as both Liverpool and Bayern target Spanish manager

Prior to the summer, Jan Aage Fjortoft thinks that Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso does not prioritise Liverpool.

The Reds are looking for a new manager after Jurgen Klopp revealed that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

The German, who came to Anfield in 2015, will say goodbye to the club he won the Premier League and Champions League titles with.

Liverpool have shortlisted managers to replace the legendary German and former midfielder Xabi Alonso is the frontrunner in the club’s eyes to take over at the club. Other names linked with Liverpool are Roberto De Zerbi of Brighton and Sporting’s Rubin Amorim.

Football pundit Jan Aage Fjortoft hinted on social media that Alonso might not prioritise Liverpool.

There have been conflicting claims in the media about Alonso’s priority, with both Liverpool and Bayern Munich interested in appointing him.

However, Fjortoft has revealed that Alonso’s priority is to stay at his current club Bayer Leverkusen, who are favourites to win the Bundesliga title this season. Fjortoft believes that Alonso is developing something unique with Leverkusen and that he won’t give up easily.

After ranking Alonso’s most likely choices, Fjortoft concludes that staying at Leverkusen is the best option—possibly to bide his time for the Real Madrid position in 2025.

Furthermore, it states that Bayern are ranked fourth and Liverpool are ranked third, suggesting that Fjortoft doesn’t believe Alonso is actively seeking to leave.

Alonso played for Liverpool, Bayern and Real Madrid in his career and the prospect of returning to them as a manager would appeal to him.

Two of them need a manager at the end of the season while one of them, Real Madrid, might need a manager at the end of next season.

Alonso will have a tough choice to make but to have those options on his table is something that would delight him. Any manager in the world would love to have those options.
