Manchester United reportedly wanted to sign Lewis Hall this summer, but simply left it too late with their move for the Newcastle United left-back.
The Red Devils directly approached the Magpies over Hall, as they were keen to bring in the talented young defender for around £50m.
It might have been possible if they’d moved earlier in the summer, but Man Utd missed their chance once Newcastle had already sold Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes, according to the Athletic.
There’s really no way to sugar-coat this – United were simply too slow to make their move for Hall, and that also helped their rivals get the players they wanted.
If MUFC had been quicker, there’s always the possibility that it would have been Arsenal or Tottenham who would be told that Guimaraes and Tonali, respectively, were no longer available.

United may have messed up their search for a left-back this summer, but one imagines they will continue to show an interest in Hall.
The England international has shone at St James’ Park and will no doubt continue to be on the radar of all the top clubs if he continues that way.

For now, United will have to make do with Luke Shaw, but he’s surely heading towards the end of his Old Trafford career as he’s not getting any younger and has had repeated fitness issues throughout his time at the club.
Hall looks like he’d be an ideal long-term successor to Shaw, so United will have to try this move again in the near future.
Newcastle have shown that they’ll sell some of their stars, so that must give United some hope that they could get a deal done for Hall at some point.
However, when that happens it will surely be for more than £50m as he looks like a talent whose value will only continue to go up and up.
Lewis Hall is the last player Man U or anyone else will be able to buy from Newcastle. He is the bedrock of the team.
