Manchester United have been linked with a move for the Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
The 32-year-old goalkeeper could be on the move this summer, and he’s likely to cost around £35-40 million. According to Football Insider, Manchester United are keeping tabs on him, but any move for the player will be dependent on them managing to sell Andre Onana.
The Cameroon goalkeeper has been quite underwhelming since the move to Manchester United, and his mistakes have cost the team valuable points. Manchester United should look to get rid of the player in the summer and bring in an upgrade.
Man United need Emiliano Martinez
They cannot hope to challenge for major trophies without a world-class keeper at their disposal. Martinez has proven himself for club and country over the years. He is a world-class goalkeeper who will help them improve immensely. He helped Argentina win the World Cup and the Copa America. He will look to win major trophies at the club level now. He moved to a big club like Manchester United could be quite exciting for him.
The player has offers from Saudi Arabian clubs, but he wants to continue in European football for now. Manchester United must make the most of the opportunity to sign the player this summer.
Andre Onana must move on
It remains to be seen whether they can find a suitable destination for Onana. The former Milan goalkeeper has been quite mediocre, and it would be ideal for him to move on. He has been criticised heavily for his performances, and a fresh start away from the limelight would be ideal for him.
As for Martinez, he is well settled in the Premier League, and he could make an instant impact at Old Trafford. It remains to be seen how the situation develops.
He would be an upgrade on Onana but would only sign him for a low fee.
Martinez does give you an edge a lot of keepers don’t have, but at age 32 & £40m, I don’t think so.
There are very good younger (but mentally mature) keepers available in Europe for that £40m, whose character is the other factor we should be investing in, expecting him to provide immediate stability, developing into becoming a leader in 2 years, just as Martinez would be looking to move on, to Saudi at a financial loss, with the keepers we missed out on probably valued at £70m+.
