Manchester United have decided to stand by Michael Carrick despite another frustrating result, with INEOS not planning to sack the manager following Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

United had a golden chance to take all three points at Old Trafford after Bryan Mbeumo put them ahead and Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off.

Instead, Dominic Solanke equalised deep into stoppage time, leaving Carrick’s side with just six points from their opening six Premier League matches.

That is far from the start United wanted, but the club’s hierarchy are not preparing to make an immediate change.

INEOS still backing Carrick despite poor start

According to TEAMtalk, United’s owners have decided not to alter their stance on Carrick following the Tottenham result.

Transfer insider Graeme Bailey said: “The message from the club, they don’t think they have played too badly.”

He added that United were never expecting a title challenge this season, with Champions League qualification viewed as the more realistic objective.

Bailey continued: “Clearly being in 12th at this point isn’t ideal, but they weren’t putting the pressure on him to have a title charge this season.”

He finished by making United’s current position clear: “The message coming from Old Trafford at the moment is he’s not under pressure.”

There is a reasonable argument for patience.

Carrick earned the permanent job after guiding United to third last season, so judging him after six league matches would feel premature.

Still, the numbers are uncomfortable. Reuters noted that United’s six points from six games represent their worst start to a league season since 1986/87.

That statistic alone explains why the pressure is building. The bigger concern is how United threw away Saturday’s advantage. They were leading at home against 10 men and still could not close the game out.

INEOS are right not to panic, but Carrick now needs performances to turn into wins. Public backing means very little if the table continues to look ugly.

For the moment, his job is safe. The next few matches will determine how long that remains the case.

  1. We must put an extra man in midfield when we are getting run over by teams. Fernandes needs to move back or else we need to play 3 midfielders between, Baleba, Mainoo, Santos, Mount, or Tielemans. 4-3-3 or 4-3-2-1 , we need a mobile player with Baleba and Mainoo in midfield, and if Carrick has to tone of the academy players there, then so be it. DeLigt will tighten up the backline when he comes back, but Yoro needs to play also. Armer could be brought up also. Carrick has to fix this and should be trying everything to improve this team, including the formation and adding more young legs to the panel and USING them.

  3. Carrick isn’t the right man for the job, we need elite coach with tactical brilliance to elevate the spirit and tye the tempo.

  4. The problem is very clear. Every team is out running us. The players seems to be unfit, uninterested. Fernandez have a huge dip in form from last season. It is not about tactics. It is about whether players care or not. Carrick does not have to gut like Sir Alex to drop non performing players to buck them up. Lacey, Amass, Mount, Heaven should be brought in to freshen things up. Too late for Chido

  5. Any supporter with a Glass Eye and a Cork Eye can see playing a formation of 4 2 3 1 ain,t working we are continually being overun by opposition teams aware of MUs midfield shambles it,s time now to clean out the team starting with the supposed ‘Prodigal Son’ fernandes why proscatinate over selling him a no brainer then clean out the overage defenders give the Youth a chance.

    1. 100%. Only Man Utd hang on to deadwood, and then wonder why players leave at the end of a contract or for a pittance. With the exception of a couple of players, the rest are squad players at best. No. I’d go so far as to say not good enough. Media darlings such as Fernandes get a free pass, but he has been the shackles that prevents the side from expressing itself. He absolutely should have been sold but INEOS and Carrick are too feared of the backlash from media and ‘fans’ if the results did’t improve. Look at how the pundits, bloggists, media portray the return of Amad to the line-up. Geezo, he’s bang average in all aspects of his game with the occasional glimpse of something decent. But you’d think it was the second coming! Deluded. Dare I say it, we should adopt the same approach as City – De Bruyne, Silva, Gundogan, Rodri….you name it…world class players having reached their peak, or in other cases, not good enough to make the City grade and shipped on eg. Savio and Marmoush. Utd adopt the Phil Jones approach. Jobs for the lads. All too chummy. If Utd are to operate at the highest levels in the PL and CL, they need to get ruthless. Fire sale because we don’t generate much else. And you adopt the ruthless approach to recruitment. Players who are on the up. Proven in the PL. And you throw good but not stupid £ at them. Performance related contracts. And just get rid if they don’t meet standard. The present crop of players are simply not good enough and we have seen it for a decade….although I really enjoyed Baleba’s debut. Potential there.

      1. I absolutely agree with you, you’re not going to compete if you’re buying the sort of players that we have been buying, wasting money on the midfield players we have just bought! Saying you’re interested in Scott, Tonali and such like when you’re absolutely not and just hoping the fanbase buy into it. We have players who were not good enough four years ago and are still taking wages.

  6. United yesterday 1st half: Boring and horrible football. Individually and as a team chaotic. Body language unprofessional. What’s Tielemanns doing on the pitch? Special task from Carrick to be everywhere and nowhere….
As a fan I observe a poisoned atmosphere in the past years with unusable ownership, unsuccessful Managers since AF and totally overpaid players
RESTART in the CHAMPIONSHIP with young players!
