Everything is going swimmingly for Tottenham Hotspur under the good ship Redknapp. Indeed, it’s almost easy to forget what a laughing stock the club were a few short weeks ago, when the team were without a win and seemingly rudder-less. Since Juande Ramos has left, many players have come out and revealed how low morale was under the Spaniard, although his former sidekick has hit back. [Read the rest of this entry »]
After losing Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov this summer, it was important for Spurs to replace them with a quality signing or two. Surely Juande Ramos had to find a forward that could link up with Darren Bent and help his team score plenty of goals in the process, catapulting them towards the UEFA Cup places, maybe even a Champions League spot? [Read the rest of this entry »]
Kevin Keegan is unlikely to be returning as Newcastle manager for a third time and Alan Shearer has decided against throwing his hat into the ring for the vacant position at St James’ Park. Therefore, it appears as though any appointment will not be to the fans’ liking, although this one could send a cacophony of boos ringing around Tyneside. [Read the rest of this entry »]
Goodness me, who could have predicted the scoreline at White Hart Lane on Sunday? Newcastle had only just managed to win a match under Kevin Keegan when all of a sudden, the exciting football promised by the messiah starts to arrive in London of all places! Presumably that’s because people prefer going to the theatre down south rather than supporting their local team? Or maybe it’s because the Tottenham FC manager severely underestimated the opposition, playing three up front in an attempt to smash them to pieces.
Even so, Juande Ramos is not taking the rap for the defeat, according to the Daily Telegraph. Apparently some of the players are lacking in motivation according to the Spaniard and his mouthpiece assistant Gus Poyet, who have laid down the law to their squad of under-performing players in no uncertain terms.
“In the lower-profile games, they don’t seem to have the same level of motivation,” said Ramos.
“This is something we have to analyse. It is a long season and they have to continue to perform.
“If they are not capable of doing this, then that is something we have to solve and be worried about and take appropriate measures for next season.
“We’re at a phase of the season that is not quite so important, so it’s a chance to look at players and see the squad and make some decisions.”
It’s clear that wholesale changes will be made at the Lane in the summer, with a host of players already being linked with moves to / away from Tottenham. Even so, wasn’t yesterday just a case of the North London team being outnumbered in midfield? Ramos might have been forgiven for thinking the Magpies were tosh based on previous matches, but they at least showed yesterday that they can be an attacking force to be reckoned with if given space and time on the ball.

Spurs fans must be delighted with the way that the season has turned out. Although there was no shortage of goals and entertainment under Martin Jol, his replacement Juande Ramos has provided Tottenham with a steely edge, enabling them to move away from the foot of the Premier League and win the Carling Cup.
However, if you thought the excitement was over for the season, you’d be wrong. Gus Poyet has been busy explaining to the official Spurs website that the North London club are going all out to try and win every match this season, at whatever the cost.
“We have seven games to go and we have to just try and be consistent and to try to win them all, even when we are away from home.,” stated Gus.
“I don’t think we are in a position where we need to be holding out for a result like a 0-0 or something like that.
“I would say 99% we are going to go for the games especially where we are in the table.
“There is nothing to lose really. You have to go and try and win games in order to add points to the table and it worked against Portsmouth. Juande was trying to open the game up, it was too close, too difficult, not many chances. We risked it.
“We have to try to win every game now. Like I said before we have no problems in the table – nothing to lose – so just go and try to prove we can win.”
Can we expect some more humdingers such as the 4-4 with Chelsea and Aston Villa, the 3-3 with Fulham and the 6-4 against Reading? With Newcastle’s generous defence in town on Sunday, it could be fill your boots time for the Tottenham strikers!
Since winning the Carling Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley, Tottenham Hotspur had gone derailed but their 4-0 battering of poor old West Ham United was some indicator that Spurs are back on track.
Spurs hammered the Hammers 4-0 at White Hart Lane in the Premiership on Sunday and their assistant manager Gus Poyet says that the win is an important morale booster for the players. Poyet says:
It was excellent. We started the game with two goals and then we did not risk too much when they went down to ten men.
We kept the ball well and of course we were still looking for the third goal.
It was a very good performance. I’m very happy.
We knew it would be difficult because of what happened to West Ham in the last couple of games, so it was important to start well.
They were two great headers, two great deliveries from Tom Huddlestone. And when you have a player like Berba you know you are going to get goals.
Spurs do not have much to play for in the Premiership this season but manager Juande Ramos would surely like his players to groove into the winning mentality so that they can raise the bar next season.
Last weekend Tottenham Hotspur were soaring high up in the clouds after their Carling Cup triumph over Chelsea at Wembley but after Saturday’s 4-1 thrashing by relegation-threatened Birmingham City at St. Andrew’s in the English Premier League, Spurs have been cruelly pulled down to earth.
Spurs’ assistant manager Gus Poyet describes this hammering as a wake-up call and admits that improvement is needed:
It was not good enough. We weren’t here in every aspect of the game. Concentration wasn’t there and we didn’t play as a team. It was not a team performance.
It’s nothing about what happened after the Carling Cup. We’ve had three very good days in training and expected to come here and win the game. We had to assume that we were ready for the game today.
You expect everyone coming into the first team to perform. Sometimes players are asking for opportunities and they had a great chance today. There are no excuses.
Despite letting in four goals Poyet had praise for goalkeeper Paul Robinson who has come under strong criticism but admits the team must pull together.
He (Robinson) was put under a lot of pressure. We left him one-on-one a few times and he had a difficult day. I’m sure he’s not happy.
It’s a wake up call. If we don’t wake up now we’re going to continue losing games.
We had many shots but apart from long distance efforts we didn’t really create many attempts.
We tried to put it right straight away, changed a couple of things, but that was not us out there today.
We have to be strong mentally to make sure that we play every game well and that’s something we will have to prove next Sunday.
Spurs have already guaranteed themselves a UEFA Cup berth for next season with their Carling Cup triumph and are safe from relegation worries. They do not have much to play for this season anymore but manager Juande Ramos would certainly like his players to be more focused and concentrated.
Tottenham Hotspur first-team coach Gus Poyet is confident that top striker Dimitar Berbatov will not leave White Hart Lane in the summer. His confidence in the Bulgarian international hitman stems from Sunday’s Carling Cup final defeat of Chelsea.
Poyet says:
I’m sure Berba is going to be here and going to be trying to win even more. He knows he can win things at this club. It was something that was difficult before, but he’s now done it. There were a few players that there were rumours that they were leaving. They stayed and there were a few players that came here in January. I know that all of them now know they made the right decision, because they are already champions. That’s what we want to say to everyone, ‘Come here, we will help you and you will help us to win titles.
May his wish come true. So much so that Berbatov himself has hinted that he may as well remain at Spurs next season too.
Is Paul Robinson’s career at Tottenham Hotspur finally coming to an end? He is by no means guaranteed England’s number 1 any more and he could just be packing his bags from White Hart Lane too.
But when Sky Sports asked Spurs assistance manager Gus Poyet whether Robinson would depart from the club or not, the former Spurs player refused to release any statement but at the same time didn’t exactly deny hat Robinson is welcome to stay on at White Hart Lane.
This is what Puyot told Sky Sports:
I would say no comment, because I don’t know. You are the first one to tell me that. I don’t know. We like him. We said last week there is nothing wrong with Robbo. He’s part of the team and was involved today in the squad.
True, Robinson was involved in the Spurs squad that had to swallow humble pie as London rivals beat them 2-0 in the English premier League on Saturday. But crucially for Robinson, he was not involved with the team that was actually playing on the pitch against Chelsea and this is the second successive match that Robinson has been dropped from the first team by Juande Ramos.
So what do you think? Is Robinson’s time at White Hart Lane finally drawing to a close? Do you think that he should be given more chances or is it good for Spurs that they find another custodian?
